Session Details

What is the best time of day to schedule a session?

For outdoor portraits, very early morning (about an hour after sunrise) and late afternoon/early evening (up to an hour before sunset) provide the most flattering light. Harsh shadows are produced by the midday sun however, if the area is well shaded, we can shoot any time of day. For indoor natural light portraits, early morning to mid-afternoon is best.

Although these are the optimal times for a photo shoot, I understand that they may not be practical or possible for some. If the kids feel the best at noon, then let's do the shoot then. I am more than happy to work with anyone's schedule.

How long will the session last?

I never want to rush a session so please allow 1 1/2 hours, though it can be shorter or longer. For family photography, if I have not had a chance to meet your children prior to the shoot, I like to spend some time initially with them playing and laughing so they feel more at ease. My goal is to get them beyond the "cheese" smile.

Once you book a session we will have a consultation to discuss what your expectations might be regarding the shoot. I like to get an idea of what you have in mind, what occasion you might be shooting for, clothing selections, etc. If you're not sure, that's fine... I have plenty of ideas and will create a mix of original styles that I feel suit you and your family's style.

Location

The setting for your portraits can be anywhere you choose: your home, back yard, one of our many beaches, a favorite park, downtown or even a historic site (where permitted). My home studio is always available, but keep in mind children are often more at ease in a familiar setting. If we choose an outside setting, we will also schedule a rain date or an indoor location as a back-up.

I shoot using both natural and studio lighting. My preference is to use natural light (e.g., window light), but my studio lighting and backdrops are completely portable and will set up in almost any room in your home.

When to schedule your maternity shoot:

Planning your photography session six to ten weeks prior to your due date is typically best. If you find that you are closer than that and haven't booked, just give me a call and I will do my best to work you into the schedule.

How to prepare for a successful maternity photography session

Try to schedule your shoot on a day you know you can relax, take your time and enjoy the day. This day is about you, your partner and your children (if being photographed) and I want you all to feel wonderful.

If your shoot includes more personal shots, a few hours prior to your shoot, if you have the opportunity, please remove any undergarments that may be restrictive or leave marks on your skin.

  • To photograph your belly and cover your breasts, a solid color cardigan sweater, a rumpled button down shirt, a fitting tank top or any piece of clothing you feel comfortable in will work nicely. Let's try to avoid stripes and items of clothing with logos (unless you are going for a certain look.)
  • If we are shooting you and your partner and children, please have on hand dark pants and a solid dark shirt, long or short sleeve. If you would like or are not sure, bring along multiple items and we can choose which ones look best.
  • Often matching colors or tones work nicely when shooting you and your partner (and child.)
  • Family ~ blue or pink shirts to go along with the sex of your child (if you know)
  • Family ~ dark color pants, jeans, shorts or skirts
  • For Moms ~ if you are comfortable wearing regular jeans, just not buttoned, the open fly/button look with belly exposed is quite lovely
  • Family ~ fitted long sleeve dark (mostly studio shots) or light color shirts really draw the eye to the belly.
  • Moms ~ your favorite dress for a beautiful silhouette, skirt with fitted tank top to show off your belly or a baiting suit and sarong for those fun filled summer beach days.
  • A natural hair and make-up style will look best for the shoot. Heavy mascara, shadow and eyeliner can film very dark. Some mothers prefer to go to the stylist for a true day of relaxation and pampering (even a maternity massage); please let me know if you would like me to recommend someone.
  • Jewelry is always nice in photographs and often defines your style however, too much can be distracting. If you need guidance, have your items handy and we can discuss.
  • Have a light meal or snack.
  • Please bring along or have handy whatever makes you feel comfortable ~ your robe, a favorite CD, flowers, a scarf or lingerie, ribbons for your belly, your baiting suit top or sarong for the beach.
  • If you have your child's name chosen, we can always incorporate the name into a photo with blocks, paint or we can be creative.
  • I am happy to recreate any poses you (and your husband) have thought about, seen in a magazine, online or from a friend's maternity shoot. The best way to remember is to print the picture or write down how the subjects were positioned.

Please note if you wear glasses during a session glare may or may not appear. Glare on glasses in not repairable in any photo editing software. I recommend removing glasses during your session.

How to prepare for a successful family photography session

Try to schedule your shoot on a day you know you can all relax, take your time and enjoy the day.

Moms~ If you would like to take more personal photographs, a few hours prior to your shoot, if you have the opportunity, please remove any undergarments that may be restrictive or leave marks on your skin.

  • Shooting children sometimes runs into lunch or snack time; have a light snack before the shoot but have a few things ready just in case.
  • Have solid colors readily available without logos for all of you. Matching colors really look nice in the family photos.
  • Jewelry is always nice in photographs and often defines your style however too much can be distracting. If you need guidance, have your items handy and we can discuss.
  • Please have babies or children's favorite items (and one that makes noise) handy to help cheer up if necessary or bring their attention toward the camera.
  • For kids of all ages, feel free to bring a favorite doll, toy, blanket, musical instrument or other hobby item, etc. that you may wish to include in the portrait.

Please note if you wear glasses during a session glare may or may not appear. Glare on glasses in not repairable in any photo editing software. I recommend removing glasses during your session.

Proofs will be available approximately 10-14 days after your session. Your images will be available to you (with password protection) for online viewing with a local vendor. A link to an executable slideshow will be e-mailed for you to choose your prints and to share with family and friends. Orders can be made through the gallery. Alternatively, if you would like, I am happy to discuss the images with you in person or over the phone to assist in the cropping, enhancing, photo combinations and framing. We can also discuss items such as coffee table books, custom storyboards, framing, announcements or other specialty items.

Referral Program

If a friend has referred you or you refer a friend, please let me know. Each person you refer to Infinity is another family I get to meet, photograph and provide memories. As a thank you, for each referral, you AND your friend will receive a credit towards your next session or your prints depending on the type of shoot.

If you have ideas or items that you would like me to consider or implement, I would love to hear them! If ever there is anything I can do to make your photo shoot a better one, please let me know immediately. The shoot is always about you and I will do everything in my power to make it a memorable one.
